step by step instructions for completing the DAR application papers

Type two identical application papers using the official acid free forms and a good black typewriter ribbon. secure the proper signatures using black ink. notarize the applications. you may prepare one original complete with signatures and natary mark and then photo copy the application. submit both copies with the fees and dues (a check for $40 for a member of a chapter or $45 for a member at large.)

type the full name of Revolutionary Ancestor. do not use titles or ranks.

endorsers are certifying that they know the applicant personally and that she is acceptable to the chapter and the National Society.

throughout application use the full or legal name. Do not use initials alone. a nickname may be written in "quotes".
A woman is referred to by her maiden name or if a widow as Mrs. first, middle, (maiden name) surname, i.e. Mrs. Jane Ann (Smith) Doe.
places should be cited as town, county, or parish and state.
dates are to be given day, month, year. all names, dates, and places must be complete with proof that will clearly tie each generation to the preceding one.
family tradition is not proof. pedigree charts, family group sheets, undocumented genealogies and membership applications in other lineage societies are not proof.
list proof for each generation.
cite author, title, date of publication, edition, and page numbers when published books are used as proof. many books and records are not available at the DAR library, it is to the applicant's advantage to send photocopies of the published sources.

write the complete service. list dates, places, officers, battles, or military units.
do not use the DAR Patriot Index as proof of service.
the applicant's signature in black ink should be identical to her name on page 1. signature must be notarized.
