J.F. Bryant's Sister Dies at Daughter's

Mrs. Mary C. Walton Succombs After Illness of Only Half a Hour, at Home of Mr. and Mrs. Grant Blessing.

Mrs. Mary Catherine Walton, who was a sister of the late Joseph F. Bryant of Bethany, and one of the county's pioneers, died at 10 o'clock Thursday night after a brief illness at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Grant Blessing, southwest of Bethany several miles. She was the mother of Mrs. Blessing.

Mrs. Walton came here as a child with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Stephen O. Bryant, after her birth on February 10, in Bartholomew county, Indiana. Her husband was Columbus Thomas R. Walton, who died 27 years ago. Mrs. Walton died at the age of 85.

Her father's family was an old American one, distinguished in both Kentucky and Virginia. John Bryant, her great-grandfather, served 15 months in the Revolutionary War and was engaged in the battle of Guilford Courthouse. In the same battle his father, a brother and two uncles were engaged. One uncle was killed and the other wounded.

John Bryant married Mary Ousley, an aunt of Governor Ousley of Kentucky, came to Kentucky in 1873 and was commissioned by General Washington to survey Kentucky. He was an associate of Daniel Boone.

Mrs. Walton, although in feeble health, had been unusually alert on the day of her death. Members of the Blessing family heard her in distress that night, adn 30 minutes later she died.

Funeral services were held at the Blessing home at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon by the Rev. W.O. Dotson, where "Face to Face", "The Old Rugged Cross"and "In The Sweet Bye and Bye" were sung by Mr. and Mrs. Walter Salmon, John Salmon, Mrs. Melvin Weed, Mrs. William Ricketts, Mrs. Paul Hiatt S.M. Haas, with Ithma Cummings as accompaniest. Burial was at Miriam Cemetery, Bethany, with Melvin Weed, William Weed, W.P. Bryant, Emil Salmon, Dick Endsley, and Mr. Whitehead acting as pallbearers.
