Freeda Darlene Axsom Haggard

Grundy County Missouri And Its People page 609 Vol. II

FREEDA DARLENE (AXSOM) HAGGARD
Freeda Darlene Axsom was born December 30 1941, to Alfred and Mary Pauline (Shafer) Axsom on their farm near Cainsville. She attended Moore School, a one-room schoolhouse. In 1950 the family moved to Grundy County. Hearing the whistle, counting the cars, and running out to watch the Rock Island passanger trains were new and exciting experiences. Spring was always Freeda's season with the freshly tilled soil, baby animals, green grass, and flowers. She loved going barefoot. Freeda recalls that John and Lucille Horton helped her and her siblings with 4-H projects. At age 13, Freeda became a born again Christian at the Tindall Baptist Church. Her first job was at the Joe Collins broiler ranch.
Freeda married Jerry Lee Haggard of Mercer on June 6 1959. They have 2 daughters, one son, six granddaughters, one grandson, two great-granddaughters, and two great-grandsons. Freeda and Jerry have lived in California since June of 1970. They enjoy visiting the Midwest in the spring and fall. Freeda says, "My Grundy County home has been gone for several years, and the road we walked down to meet the school bus is covered with a canopy of trees and impassable by car."
