Bride Slapped; Osburne Jailed

Truman Osburne, 23, jailed here numerous times for assault, was sentenced to 30 days in jail by Municipal Judge Howard W Brooks Friday for allegedly striking his 19-year-old bride of nine months.
At the time she obtained an assault and battery warrant for Osburne's arrest, Mrs. Osburne had tol Judge Brooks she was "just a girlfriend of Truman's."
Married In February
She testified Friday, however, that she had married him last February in South Dakota.
When she was hesitant about testifying at the hearing Friday Mrs. Osburne was interrupted by Judge Brooks.
"You told me when you swore out this information this defendant struck you twice with his fist and burned your hand with a cigarette," Judge Brooks said. "Now proceed and tell the truth."
Mrs. Osburne then testified Osburne "struck me once and slapped me once." She added:
"It was just a domestic argument in an automobile and I don't want to press charges."
"Acting Under Fear"
In passing sentence Judge Brooks said it was "obvious the prosecuting witness was acting under fear of this defendant."
He sentenced Osburne to 30 days, the limit under the charge.
Mrs. Osburne said she is the former Lucille Izzolena, of 613 S.W. Sixty-second st. She testified she and Osburne moved here from Chicago, Ill. a month ago.
Records show Osburne has been jailed here 10 times since 1952 on assault charges, most of them resulting from gang fights. He was divorced by his first wife in 1955 on grounds of "cruel and inhuman treatment."
Osburne was taken into the court from Polk county jail where he is being held pending grand jury disposal of a charge of breaking and entering the Pantry Cafe, Sixth avenue and Keosaauqua way.
He gave his address on arrest as 3410 Bowdoin st.
