We know that James married Sally Workman 26 Dec 1818 in Tazewell County Va.

aunt minerva collection
information from Jean Leeper

He may be the James Marrs who in 1803 was paid $2.08 for one old wolf head. Also, he may be the James Marrs who witnessed a deed transfer in 1808 and in Dec 1808 was on a jury.
We next find James in "ANNOTATED ENUMERATION OF EVERY TAXPAYER-1801 TO 1820" James Marrs paid taxes in Tazewell county in 1811, 1812, 1813, 1814, and 1816. (He was in the war of 1812 in 1815). Note: brother Maxwell Marrs started paying taxes in 1820.
We find James in Cabell County VA in the 1820 federal census with: 4 males 0-10, 1 male 26-45, 1 female 0-10, 1 female 26-45, one female 45& up, then in the 1830 Tazewell Co, VA federal census with 2 males 0-5, 1 male 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 2 males 15-20, 1 male 40-50, 2 females 0-5, 2 females 5-10, & 1 female 40-50; and next in the 1840 Logan county, VA federal census, all moved up one age group except no listing for two oldest girls. they may have been married by then. On Logan county, VA tax lists in 1843 are found: James Marrs, Thomas Marrs and Joseph Mars. Jan 5 1849 Squire Thompson Workman sells to James Marrs both of Logan County VA 194? or 124 acres on White's Fork of Big Creek for $85. If I read it right it was an inheritance of Squire Thompson Marrs. On Jan 27 1849 James Marrs of Boone county VA, sells to James Bailey for $150. 124 acres on White's Fork of Big Creek. Same description as the land he purchased. Squire Thompson Workman and Sarah (Workman) Marrs would be first cousins. In the 1850 Tazewell County VA census it listed living close together: James, David, Thomas, James and Sally with sons Samuel and Wesley. James died in Harrison County MO in 1859 and Sarah Marrs* died in Grundy County Mo in 1879.
Note: in 1820 a James Marr is found in Nelson County VA and our James Mars is found in current West Virginia in Cabell County which is above Tazewell County in 1820. In 1830 a James is found in Amberst County VA and ours is living near Maxwell Marrs in Tazewell County VA. Another James Mars is in western West Virginia in Jackson Co. in 1840. No other James Mar, Mares, Marrs, Mars are found in VA federal census from 1820-1840.
From the book "ARCHIVES OF THE PIONEERS OF TAZEWELL COUNTY VIRGINIA" and taken from the record book "An annotated Enumeration of All Taxpayers-1801 to 1820." : listed are Christopher, Henry, James, Maxwell, and Samuel Marrs and Audley, James, John, Robert, Thomas, and William Maxwell (see yrs for James listed above.)
From the same book and record book "Tazewell County ORder Book No I" 25 OCtober 1808 (312) Deed from Mathias Harman to Thomas Bruster proven by oaths of John McEntosh, Sr., James Marrs and John Dailey. From same book: December 1808 (320) Rees Bowan assee, vs Obediah Gent, Attachment. Executed on sundry articles as the property of Obediah Gent, part of which property is claimed by Gideon Foster. Jury summoned to inquire into the right of property. Jury: Thomas Harrisson, Henry Marrs, John Wilson, John Davis, Geroge Thompson, William Williams, Christopher Marrs, John Maxwell, William Peery, John Laird, William Jeffrey and James Marrs. Verdict: the corn hay and cow are the property of Gideon Foster. Residue to be sold to satisfy debt. Below are listed excerpts of some of James' land deeds:
Land Deed: 27 day of March 1835
"This indenture made the 27th day of March the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty five between James Marrs of the County of Tazewell and the state of Virginia.....The other tract containing about 220 acres more or less lying in said county adjoining the first traact the same being a part of the tract of land of about 1341 acres which descended from Henry Marrs decd. to his heirs the said 220 acres being aloted to said James Marrs as his interest in said tract by agreement among said heirs..."
"...Land was sold 2nd of September 1847 for $130 and $124.50 was given to pay old debts." The deed mentions again that the land was a portion of James' inheritance from Henry Marrs. deceased.
Land Deed: 10 Nov 1841 Book 7 page 374
"...10th day Nov 1841 between James Marrs senior and Sally his wife Maxwell Marrs and Jane his wife William Marrs and Sarah his wife of Tazewell County and STate of VA of the one part and James Marrs Jr. of the County and State aforesaid of the other part...."
I have the complete documents but included only what was needed to show relationships. James is Henry's son adn James who married MArgaret is James' son.
On the 10th of February 1875 papers were filed in Grundy county MO for pension payments to Sarah (Workman) Marrs wife of James Marrs. James enlisted in Virginia Militia, William Gillespie's Company, Division of Jeffersonville, Virginia 8 Feb to 6 Mar 1815 (27 days). Was ill most of the time and honorably discharged at Roanoke County VA. Pension application rejected March 1 1875 because of insufficient service. Reapplied in 1878 with same results.
Found his probate record in Harrison county MO and also his land record. He purchased 120 acres of land in Section 19 of Township 66 Range 26 on Sept 2 1857. This land was not sold until 1865/66 to settle the estate and pay his debts. His probate records list his children: Tazewell County VA: Henry, John, David, Samuel & Oliva (Marrs) McClure. In Cabell county VA: Sina (Marrs) Smith. In Ohio: Joseph Marrs. Then in Grundy County MO: Thomas, JAmes, and Sally (Marrs) Elkins and the youngest child Wesley P. of Harrison County MO in 1860 and of Grundy County Mo in 1864.
*Sally common nickname for Sarah.

wife's notes:
Sarah (Sally) and James were married by John Peery at Jacob's Cove, VA on 28 Dec 1810. (taken from pension application papers.) Sally applied for a pension for War of 1812, which she filed on February 10 1875/ Application was rejected. She was living in Grundy County MO with a son when she filed. Name of son not given. Found with Wesley P Marrsin Clay Twp. Harrison County MO in 1860 Census. Have not found in 1870 census yet. Checked cemetery records in Harrison County MO neither there. Since her husband died in Harrison County MO, they probably came at the same time as James, Wesley Price, and Thomas to MO. Nancy Elvira Marrs was suppose to have been born in Harrison county MO in 1856. she was Thomas' daughter.
