(this diary was a gift xmas 1938 to my grandmother Mary Pauline Shafer Axsom from her future mother in law Daisy Olive Boyd Axsom, and has details about their daily lives....Alfred & Pauline's courtship, her appendectomy,fixing up their first house to live in, expecting their first child & some of her first year. this is on loan from my Aunt Freeda Haggard-Paulines' 2nd dau.) i'm sure i have made typos. I really got caught up in this. )

Jan1 1939 Mother, Betty, & I went to Bessies, & Ralph went to Saline. Junior & Dean went to Darrel Melson's in the afternoon.
Jan2 1939 I came down to Jenette's today to stay for a week. She is giving me 25 cents a day to stay this week.
Jan3 1939Jenette & I tacked on a comfort today. Jr. & Buster came down today. Jr. stayed all night & let me come home tonight.
JAn4 1939 I am at Jenette's again tonight. We finished tacking a comfort today and hemmed around it.
Jan5 1939 I came home from Jenette's Jr. went down. Bessie & Floyd Jr. came over today. Grandma came down yesterday with Ralph.
Jan6 1939 Grandma, Mother, & I went to Jenette's today. Junior is still there. Grandma stayed tonight.Ralph & Dean went to Lois' tonight.
JAn 7 1939John J. cut my hair today. Mother went to see MRs. Axsom & Mollie this afternoon. Dean & Ralph went to town tonight.
Jan8 1939Grandma & Jr. came home this morn. Ralph, Mom, Betty & I took Grandma home today. We listened to her radio.
Jan9 1939 IT has been 7 months today since Daddy died. Ralph,Jr., & Marshall shucked fodder today. I went to Lois' this eve
Jan10 1939We washed today. I went to see Miss Axsom & Mollie this aft. Mollie isn't very well. I got some papers at Daisy's.
Jan11 1939Mrs. Land came down this afternoon & we rented for next year. Ralph & Marshall chopped on Jane Hamilton.
Jan12 1939 Mother & I went to Jenette's today. Ralph & Jr. went to Merle Huff's sale. edgar wasn't very well today.
Jan13 1939 Annie Booth died today. Ralph & Marshall cut wood on Jane Hamilton today. It (can't read) some. Lester borrowed the guitar. Junior went to Lois' this eve.
Jan 131940 Aunt Dell died today. Mother & Daisy sat up there tonight. Alfred & I stayed at Johnnie's tonight. It snowed a lot today and drifted tonight.
JAn14 1939 Mamie, Wilma, & Mary Lou came over about noon. Dean went to Grandma;s to stay all night. Mamma went to see Mollie this eve.
Jan141940 Alfred & I came home today. The snow is awfully deep. I don't feel very well this afternoon.
Jan15 1939 Bessie came over today. Jr. went to Grandma's this morn. Ralph went to Oscar's this afternoon. Ralph came up this afternoon.
Jan15 1940 WE went up to DAisy's this morn. Ralph, Mom, Betty, & Granny came by and D. & I went up to see Aunt Dell with them. A& I stayed at D's tonight.
Jan18 1939 Aunt Dell had a stroke this morn. Mom has been up there today & is staying tonight. Aunt D. is so awfully bad. Jr. is at Jenette's tonight. Jr. & Ralph went to Lois' today.
Jan19 1939 Mom came home this morning & slept about 2 hrs. She, RAlph, Betty & I went up to Aunt Dells late this eve. & stayed till bedtime. Jr. & Dean went to Marvin's.
Jan20 1939 Mom & I started to Bessie's but heard Mollie was worse so stayed there all day. Mom & Ralph stayed all night. Mollie is awful bad.
Jan20 1940 today is AUnt Mary's birthday.
Jan21 1939 Mom, Betty, & I went to Bessie. this afternoon. Mollie died today at 25 after 1. Junior went to Grandma's . Ralph went to town with Jacky ?
JAn29 1939 we went up to see Mollie this evening. She looked awfully nice. Mother, Ralph, Bessie & Lois K & Maude M. sat up there last night. Betty & I went to Lois' this eve.
Jan23 1939 Mollie was buried today at 2:00. Ralph helped dig her grave. Mom went to her funeral with Oral, Lois, & Bessie. I stayed with Mrs. Axsom while they were gone.
Jan24 1939 Jr. went to Jennette's this afternoon. Mom went up to Aunt Dollie's today. Sue & Julian camem We rode home with them, Aunt Dell is some better. leta was there.
Jan25 1939 Mother & I stayed with Aunt Dell today while Punk & Opal went home. Lois & Pearl were there this afternoon. Ralph went to Saline & to Oscar's today.
Jan26 1939 Mom & Ralph went to Jennette's. I baked a checker board cake. Ralph went to Lois after the funnies this eve.
Jan27 1939 We washed today. Ralph, Jr, & Marshall cut wood on Jane. Willie came down. Dale Taft & Glenn Booth came to change Dale's cap that Ralph had got.
Jan28 1939 Ralph, Dean & Jack cut wood again today. Jr. hauled wood. Mother, Betty & I went to Bessie's. Punk said Aunt Dell was better today.
Jan29 1939 We stayed home today. Buster & Lester came up this morning. It has been misty & foggy today. We popped corn tonight.
Jan30 1939 Ralph, Marshall & Willie took our team & went to town today. Mother & Junior went to Jenette's this evening.
Jan 31 1939 Ralph, Jr. shucked fodder this morn. It snowed this afternoon. We washed blankets today. I went to Cora's to get some lye this morn.
Feb1 1939 Ralph & Jr. cut wood. Mother & I went up to Aunt Dell's. She is better. Betty went to Lois' to get the funnies but Lois wasn't home.
Feb2 1939 Ralph & Jr. chopped again. The groundhog saw his shadow. Lois came up this afternoon. Betty & I made Valentines tonight.
Feb3 1939 Mom, Jr, & I walked up to Oscar's today. Jr. went on to Saline this afternoon. Ralph went to town with Marshall. He bid 60cents on a radio at Jimmy Doyle.
Feb4 1939 Ralph & Marshall went to Jenette's this aft. They weren't very well. Jr. & Dean went skating this aft. Alfred & Marvin came down & played cards with the boys tonight.
Feb5 1939 We went to Grandma's today. Leta came too. "We" tore down some of Grandma's old barn. Alice Scott came down in the eve. She was pretty well.
Feb6 1939 Ralph & Jr cut wood on J. Hamilton. I went to Cora's this evening to repay some kerosene we had got from her. Betty went to Lois' after the funnies. Pearl sent us some candy.
Feb7 1939 Ralph & Jr. chopped on Jane again. We washed this morning & went to Aunt Dell's this aft. I went up to Dorothy's to get some milk for Opal. Ralph & Marshall went to town tonight.
Feb9 1939 Ralph helped Marsh. & Rufus get the Model T ready for sawing. I finished Aunt Hallie's luncheon cloth. It has been awfully cold & windy last night & today. I read in "East Lynn" tonight.
Feb9 1939 Ralph & Jr. worked to the Model T again this morn. Ralph made a little table this afternoon. I went to Lois' this morn. It rained & sleeted some today.
Feb10 1939 Betty & Dean took their exams. test. & today. It has been terribly cold today. We have read most of the day and popped corn tonight.
FEb11 1939 Ralph & Marshall went to town today. Jr. & Dean skated today. Betty & I made fromalentines this afternoon. We all read tonight.

Feb14 1939 Mom baked Dean a cake today. He is 13 years old. I went to the mailbox this morn. Mom & I went to Aunt Dell's this aft. I went up to Dorothy's awhile. They had a party at school today. My head aches.
Feb15 1939 I finished "English Orphans" today. It is Marvin's book. Ralph went to Grandma's today & Mother went to Leta's. Marshasll came up awhile tonight. I have the headache again tonight.
Feb16 1939 Mom's Aunt Lou died this morn. It snowed this morn. Ralph got a radio. Ralph & M. hauled a load of wood from Jane. I started "Lost Ecstasy" today.
Feb17 1939 Bessie came over today. She, Mom, & I went to Aunt Lou's burial. They had her funeral at town. I have the headache tonight.
Feb18 1939 We washed, ironed, scrubbed, waxed & washed windows & put up curtains today. We popped corn tonight. The boys hauled 2 loads of wood this morn.
Feb19 1939 Bessie, Bill & kids came over today. The boys played their harps & the guitar for them this aft. We all read tonight.
Feb20 1939 Ralph went to town this aft, with the team. Pearl & Lois came up this aft. It snowed some this eve. but not enough to cover the ground. It has been cold today & is tonight.
Feb21 1939 Marshall came up this aft. He & Ralph went up to the timber to see about their wood. Betty went to Lois' this eve. Pearl had got me a new dirondl (?hard to read) dress & Lois had Betty bring it to me.
Feb22 1939 Ralph, Mom, & I walked to Leta's & she & Georgie went on to Grandma's with us. The boys went up to Alfred's & Marvin's tonight. Marshall was up awhile this morning.
Feb23 1939 Mom & I went to Bessie's this morn. Bess, Bill, & Floyd Jr& us went to see Gertie Wishon this aft. She was awfully bad & at Port's. Betty went to Lois'. Ralph & Jr. sawed.
Feb24 1939 Ralph went to town today & took a load of wood to Jimmy Doyle. He joined the Jr. Leagues. Jr. cut wood today. Mother made candy this evening.
Feb25 1939 Betty & I went to Cora's this aft. & on down to Lois' to get her to wave our hair. She wasn't at home. I baked a cake this aft. to take to Grandma's tomorrow.
Feb26 1939 Sun. We went to Grandma's today. We came back by Oscar's & stopped a while. The boys took their harps & the guitar up & played for Grandma.
Feb27 1939 Mom & Ralph went up to Oscar's & helped them pack & move today. Punk moved them. I went to Jenette's today. Jr. helped Zimmerman's saw wood this aft. IT snowed this eve.
Feb28 1939 It snowed a lot last night & drifted & blowed today. Dean & Betty missed school. Marsh. & Buster came up this aft. Mom & I sewed on a quilt this aft.
Feb28 1940 Alfred took a load of wood to town today.He fixed fence this afternoon. Daisy came down a little while this eve.
Feb29 1940 Dean Maroney bought the S.B. Chapman place & will move there as soon as Millard moves.
March1 1939 We washed today & sewed on our quilt this afternoon. Avanelle told the kids that there wasn't any school yesterday. Ralph & Jr. filled up Jenettes well with snow today. We all read tonight.
March2 1939 Gertie Wishon died this morning. We washed for Jenette today & pieced quilt blocks this aft. We started our quilt day before yest. & have it half done. Avanelle is sick & there wasn't any school.
March3 1939 There wasn't any school today. We ironed this morn. Ralph & Marsh. went to Shelbie's this aft. Dean went to Aunt Dell's this aft. The boys went to Alfreds & Bens tonight.
March4 1939 Ralph went to Grandma's on Beauty. Dean went to Buster's this aft. & Jr. went to town. Ralph & Dean went down to Marshall's tonight to help him install gus new radio. Mildred set my hair this aft.
March5 1939 I made some fudge tonight. The boys went to Marshall's this morn. Betty & I went this aft. Jr. & Dean went to Lesters, Ralph to Busters & Mom to Aunt Dells this aft. Aunt D. was pretty bad. Stella Rose went with mMom.
March5 1940 Alfred & Johnnie cut a tree by the barn today. Daisy & I went up to Grandma Axsom's awhile this afternoon.
March6 1939 They had school today. The boys shucked fodder today. Mom & I pieced on our quilt. Ralph is at Jenette's tonight. Edgar is pretty bad. Marvin came down this eve. & Marshall came tonight. We popped corn tonight.
March6 1940 Alfred helped his dad clean his barn today. He hauled a load of straw & a barrel of water, Lil was here a few minutes this eve
March7 1939 Edgar is better today. We finished our quilt today. Ralph & Marshall went to town & Ralph got a new Zenith radio for $29.75. Marshall came up & helped him install it this evening.
March7 1940 A. cleaned the barn today. Lil & Geraldine were here this aft. Johnnie sowed grass seed down here this aft.
March8 1939 Rufus, Marshall, Willie & the boys sawed wood this aft. Betty went to Lois' this eve. We stayed up till after 10 tonight & listened to the radio.
March8 1940 A. cleaned the barn today. Mamie, Daisy, & Geraldine A. were here. We went to Millard's tonight & bought their cook stove.
March10 1939 I made a mistake & March 10 for March 8 Betty, Mom, & I went to Bessie's. Avanelle went to a meeting & there wasn't any school today. It rained this eve.
March10 1940 Johnnie, D., & Marvin, Alfred & I went to Cains. today. J. bought a house from Rolla Maroney. We ate dinner at G. Boyd

March9 1940 Alfred & I went up to his folks today. I cut out some flannel baby clothes. Alfred & J. hauled some straw.
March11 1939 It rained, thundered & lightened all day. Jr. & Dean went down to Marshall's & a little while before noon. We couldn't hear radio for the static so we read instead.
March11 194o I went up to Daisy's with Alfred today and made baby clothes. I made 2 blue undershirts & 1 pink gown trimmed in blue.
March12 1939 Daisy, Alfred, & Marvin came down tonight. We played cards anagroms & dominoes. We popped corn & I made some fudge.
March12 1940 Alfred cut wood today. He ate dinner at Johnnnie's. I stayed home all day. It sleeted last night & the ground is icy.
March13 1939 Ralph & Mother went to town with Punk & Opal this morning. (can't read rest of entry.)
March13 1940 We got our cook stove from Millard today. Alfred & J. helped him move. Daisy came down here. I washed.

March14 1940 Alfred hauled corn for Millard again today. Jr. C. bought a load of corn from us today. I finished washing.
March15 1939 The boys made posts again today. Willie came down tonight & brought us some fresh meat. I embroidered on my tablespread tonight.
March15 1940 Jr C. came after his corn & ate dinner wiyh us today. I went up to Mothers this aft. Alfred fixed fence & cut wood this aft.
March16 1939 we went to Jenette's today. Ralph & Jr. made posts over at Millards.
March16 1940 Alfred sawed wood at Johnnie's today. I baked light bread & scrubbed the front room today & went to G. Axsom's awhile this eve.
March17 1939 Bessie, Bill, & Floyd Jr. came over today. Mom, Bessie, Floyd Jr. & I went up to Aunt Dell's this aft. Ralph went to Lloyd Delongs.
March17 1940 we put one bed upstairs this morn. we went up to Daisy's this aft. & I cut Alfred's hair. We stayed all nite up there, it rained tonight.
March18 1939 Ralph went to town with Jock Z. this morning. Buster was here awhile this morn, also Marvin. we scrubbed & waxed& ironed & washed some today.
March18 1940 Alfred & Johnnie went to cut wood on Hartley today. I done up my work this morn. & went up to Mom's this aft.I went on after the cows.
March 19 1939 Bessie, Bill & children, Edd, Edna & Hallie came today. Bessie brought a cake & Mom made one. Edna brought me a book today."Eight Cousins" also a dress. Junior was 15 years old today. we went to Axsom's tonight.
March19 1940 Today is Jrs. birthday. He is 16. I went up & ate birthday dinner with him I finished banie's dress this aft. & drove the cows home. It rained this eve.
March20 1939 Betty & I went to Lois' this eve. She gave me a story. we listened to the radio tonight & read some.
March20 1940 Alfred & Johnnie piled wood on Hartley today. I stayed at home and baked a cake & baked light bread.
March21 1939 Mom went to Bessie's today. Willie helped the boys with their fodder. There was no school today as Avonelle has the flu. Betty visited Mrs. Axsom this morn.
March21 1940 Alfred & Johnnie cut & piled wood on Hartley. I went up to Grandma's & to Mothers awhile this evening.
March22 1939 "we" threshed at Bills today. A combine from Princeton threshed for us. Betty visited Kellar school today. Lois K. came to Bessie's awhile this eve.
March22 1940 Johnnie went to Princeton & got us 28 bales of hay. Alfred hauled manure & harrowed stalks. Mother & I went to Jenette's Marvin stayed here tonight.
March23 1939 Avanelle came after Betty to go to school this morn but Dean had already gone to town so he missed today. Cora came up this aft. Land came this morning.
March23 1940 They sawed their wood today. I stayed at home. Mother, Betty, Bessie, Mary Lou & Floyd Jr. were here a little while this evening.
March24 1939 Kenny, Lonnie, Ransel & (can't read) were here this aft. Ralph & Jr went to Jim's but the combine didn't come so they didn't get to thresh today. Willie shucked fodder here today. We couldn't listen to the radip tonight as there was too much static.
March24 1940 Today is Easter. Alfred went to his folks this aft. I stopped at Mothers awhile then went on up there. Anna & kids came up there.
March25 1939 Mom, Betty, Ralph & I went to town today. I got a note from Alfred wanting me to go the show tonight with him but my side was hurting so did not.
March25 1940 Shirley & Roy Lee are staying up here this week. Shirley stayed here last night and Marvin came here after her this eve. Roy Lee stayed (can't read)
March26 1939 I have been in bed almost all day because of my side. Ralph went to Grandmas. Daisy, Alfred & Marvin came down tonight. Dean went to Aunt Dell's this morn.

March29 1939 it snowed & rained all day. Ralph went to Jenette's this afternoon. My side is better but still hurts some

April3 1940 A.&R.L. took the team up for J. to use, Alfred came back & we planted some garden this aft. Mom was here this aft.
April4 1939 Willie helped the boys shuck fodder today. Ralph sowed oats. there was no school this aft as today is election day. it is raining tonight.
April4 1940 Alfred cut sprouts down along the creek today. I planted s. corn & beans. we went up to J.s this eve Roy Lee came home with us

April8 1939 we planted some potatoes this morn. we scrubbed this aft. Buster & Willie were here this eve. Jr & Dean went up to Marvins this aft.

April13 1939 Mom& I went to town with Punk & Opal this morn. the boys made posts again today. Ralph went to town tonight to the American Legion meeting
April14 1939 school was out today, they had a dinner at the schoolhouse. Janette got a radio today. Mom & I walked over to Bessie's this aft. Marvin, Dean & Alfred & I went to the show tonight. it was "Heart of Ariz." starring Bill Boyd.
April14 1940 Alfred plowed w. truck patches. S. & I went up there. Anna came after the kids. Charlie, Mary & kids, Hallie, Gm., Gp., Dollie & B. & Bessie'scame to Mom's I went up there.
April15 1939 Dean & Betty went to Janettes today. Ralph went to Grandma's. Jr helped Marshall fix the old Model T today. My side has hurt & I have been in bed about all day. Ralph & Dean went up to Axsom's tonight.
April16 1939 it has been cloudy all day. Dean went to Busters this morning. Ralph & Marshall went to town this aft to get gas to saw wood tomorrow. My side & head have hurt all day.
April17 1939 it has rained & snowed all day. my side got to hurting pretty bad this morn so we had Marshall take me to Duff. He gave me some pain pills & had us get some mineral oil.
April18 1939 it has been cloudy all day. the boys helped saw the rest of the wood up on Jane Hamilton this afternoon. my side hurts awfully bad tonight.
April19 2005 today has been an awfully pretty day. mom washed & scrubbed the kitchen & front room floors. she wouldn't let me help because of my side. Roe Oxford was burried today
April20 1939 my side is some better tonight. we ironed this morn. Ralph went to town today. Bessie /7 kids came over today. mom, Betty & I walked up to the mailbox with them as they went home
April21 1939 Ralph, Alfred & I went to the show tonight. It was "Keep Smilin" with Jane Withers. Alfred kissed me tonight. it was our first kiss.
April22 1939 the boys made posts at Jenette's today & we all went down. dean stayed all night there tonight. Edgar is awful poorly.
April23 1939 Buster came up & all of us but Betty went to Jenette's. Betty went to Bessie's Jim & Ethel were at Jenette's. Marvin came down this eve.

Aug28 1939 RAlph & Bud plowed today. JR & Dean corded wood. Mom washed & we ironed. School started today.
Aug29 1939 we ate dinner with Anna today. Mrs.Axsom, Daisy, Johnnie, Mom,Alfred & I went to Bethany today where Alfred & I were married. Alfred & I stayed at Anna's tonight.
Aug30 1939 Alfred & I went to town this afternoon & had our teeth filled. I fainted & was pretty sick.
Aug31` 1939 Alfred, Roy Lee, & I went for a walk this evening. Anna & Shirley came to meet us & walked back with us.
Sept1 1939 Uncle Willie came down this morn. He & Alfred went uptown a while. Alfred, Roy LEe, & I went to an Apostilic meeting tonite.
Sept2 1939 Daisy, Johnnie, &Marvin came after us this morn. we all went down home tonight. Alfred & I stayed all night down here tonight.
Sept3 1939 Mom & the kids went to Grandma's today. They had a birthday dinner for her& for Daisy today. They charivararid us down there. tonite. We stayed there tonite.
Sept4 1939 Alfred & the boys worked on our house today. he came after Mom's & me at noon. & took us to Aunt Dell's. Ralph & Dean &we went to Akron tonite.

Sept8 1939 we went to PRinceton today. Alfred sold his colt &calf. Johnny sold some pigs. Today is the first time I ever went to one of those sales.
Sept9 1939 Alfred got me a new coat & hat tonight. Alfred & the boys cut corn again today. I went down home. All of Axsoms & all of us went to town & to the show. IT was "Mysterious Rider." by Zane Gray.
Sept10 1939 we stayed down home last night.&today. MArvin came down today. we decided to go to Des Moines tomorrow. we stayed down home tonight.
Sept11 1939 we heard the Jr.League boys play tonight and saw them. mom &the kids,MArvin,Alfred & I went to Des Moines with Punk. We went to Vera's, John's, &then to MAry's. the boys went to the capital & historical building.
Sept12 1939 Grandma came home with us, too. we all went to Hallie's & then to Dollie's today. we came home tonight. Mary,Rich,Pat, Dollie & Barbara came home with us. Alfred & I went up home tonight.
Sept13 1939 we went to Grandma's today & came back by Bessie's for supper. Mom, Betty, Alfred, & I took Mary & Dollie to Davis City tonite. Alfred & I are going to stay at Albert W. & do his chores while they're away.

dec25 1938 we all walked to OScars & on to Saline. Grandma gave me a hankie & pencil. WE had a nice time & didn't get home until night.

i found out by reading this: that playing games & visiting neighbors & family was a part of Grandma & Grandpa's youth as well as their old age. That Grandma started reading Cappers at age 17. there were movies in Cainsville in 1939...apparently 2 different show each weekend! Grandma liked the word "awfully."...they worked very hard setting up their first house...papering, blacking, etc. they constantly had little nieces & nephews over.
